Guitar Sessions 48: “Box of Rain” for two guitars
Lately I’ve been playing the Grateful Dead’s classic “Box of Rain,” a beautiful song with extra poignance since the passing of its composer, Phil Lesh.
When working on guitar arrangements, I love to try different positions and approaches. With “Box of Rain,” I found a satisfying way to play the song in double-dropped-D tuning in open position—and I also discovered it sounds great in dropped-D tuning with a capo at the seventh fret.
Two sets of shapes in different ranges—and they mesh so well together.
So here’s a video that shows both guitar parts in a split screen. On Patreon you can download the charts as well as the audio mix (with one guitar panned left and the other to the right).
I thought you might find this useful as an illustration of how you can find different sounds and possibilities in different zones on the guitar, and how when you are playing with two guitars, spreading out the parts can create a rich collective sound.
