Guitar Sessions 36: The sweet sound of sixths, part two

Here’s a follow-up to the last Guitar Sessions episode on how to play melody lines and riffs harmonized in sixths.

In the previous episode (watch it here), I shared how to play a major scale harmonized in sixths and use it to play riffs from classic songs by Van Morrison, Cat Stevens, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Grateful Dead, and more.

That lesson focused on major chords. In this follow-up, I add minor chords and seventh chords to the mix, and show how to play:

  • Minor scales harmonized in sixths

  • “Peace Train” (Cat Stevens) intro riff

  • “Brown Eyed Girl” (Van Morrison) chorus riff

  • “Operator” (Jim Croce) intro riff

  • Seventh chord riffs

  • Blues progression with seventh chord riffs

With these two lessons, you’ve got the building blocks to create harmonized riffs over any song, by following the chord progression.
