Guitar Sessions 44: Play “Deep Elem Blues”
In this episode of Guitar Sessions, I share how to play an arrangement of the great traditional song “Deep Elem Blues,” inspired by the Grateful Dead’s classic acoustic performance on the Reckoning album.
This arrangement isn’t a re-creation of the Dead’s version. I play in a different key (D rather than E, as the Dead used) and also use dropped-D tuning—which makes it possible to play the intro and add riffs and solos even if you’re playing by yourself. My groove is also a bit funkier than what the Dead played.
I find this song so fun to play and sing—I’ve been doing it lately with my Dead to the Core collective—and I hope you enjoy it as well. You’ll find lots of guitar ideas here you could steal for other songs and arrangements.
On Patreon you can download complete charts/tab for the lesson, plus watch an extended video that dives into the intro and solos.
