Guitar Sessions 22: Play Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours”

In this video lesson, learn to play the ever-popular “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz—combining the rhythm and the lead riff.

With its island bounce and sweetly romantic lyrics, “I’m Yours” is an irresistible tune that has traveled far and wide since its release in 2008 on We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things.

Musically, this is a simple song, but it has some interesting twists and backstory. Mraz played it for years mostly strumming barre chords in standard tuning, but then an instrumental cover by a teenage YouTuber from South Korea inspired Mraz to rearrange the song in a highly unusual alternate tuning (D G C G B E) in order to add some melodic riffs.

In this lesson I share the basics of Mraz’s two versions, then teach an arrangement of my own in standard tuning that combines the reggae-style rhythm with the lead guitar hook. Very accessible and fun to play.
